THE TOY CAVE CALAMITY

Betty the Yeti was so pleased with herself. She had spent all morning sorting out her dolls’ cave and she had everything looking great. The pink bedroom had a pink duvet, a pink wardrobe, a pink stool and a pink dressing table. The green bedroom had a green duvet, a green wardrobe, a green stool and a green dressing table.

She had matched tiny little yellow towels with the yellow duck tiles in the bathroom and had made a little yellow mat from some of gran’s wool scraps. The living room was looking very cosy with its red sofa and chairs and big mirror over the fire. But her favourite room was the dining room. It had a large shiny wooden table with a big silver candle sticks and a vase of pink roses.

She had set her little family of yetis in place, then stepped back and smiled at her hard work. She was pleased that she had tried so hard to make it nice.

Just then there was a knock at the door. Two of Betty’s friends, the twins Rose and Ruby had come to play. “Ooh! Look at your lovely toy yeti’ cave! They exclaimed.

The twins ran over and started to play. They swapped the pink duvet and the green duvet first and put the two smallest yetis into the beds.

“Let’s to move the living room upstairs.” Suggested Ruby. Betty was upset, she didn’t want the rooms changed but what should she do. Ruby and Rose had come to play but she had spent so much time getting her doll’s house just the way she wanted.

“I know said Rose, let’s get the wooden puppy and put him in the attic!” and she ran off to get it.” Betty was starting to worry that her house might get broken.

“I want to put a truck in the garden.” said Ruby. The twins were having such fun that they hadn’t noticed how upset Betty was. It was only when Rose moved Betty’s little yellow rug onto the dining table as a tablecloth that Betty let out a sob.

“Oh no, what’s wrong Betty?” asked the twins.

“You…you’ve changed all my toy cave!” sniffed through her tears. “I spent ages making it look nice!” she said in a wobbly voice.

“Now Betty!”, Gran’s voice came through the door, the cave is for playing with not just looking at. You want your friends to be here and to enjoy themselves don’t you?”

“Yes,” hiccupped Betty, “ But it’s all such a mess now!”

The twins became very upset. “We’re so sorry Betty, we would never want to upset you. We should have asked before we started playing. They both started to cry too.

“Come on now,” smiled gran giving all three of them a cuddle. “What is it we yetis always say: You can always make it better.”

“Yes!” chorused the twins, “We can all make it better.

“I know,” said Rose, “Betty can give us directions and we can put everything back where it should be.” “We can make it a game. You know, you can tell us words like above, below, beside and on.” Added Ruby.

Betty smiled and sniffed. The twins really were good yeti friends. They hadn’t wanted to make her upset. “ Right,” she said, “Lets start by putting the red dog ON the shelf ABOVE my books.”

Soon the little yetis had finished sorting the cave house. Gran made them special yeti milkshakes and yeti paw cookies as a little treat. The little yetis sat down and looked at the great job they had made of tidying the cave and hugged one another. “ Grreat job!” grinned Betty.
